Event description

Benjamino and meadowhip - Wollongong’s finest purveyors of cheek and sarcasm - have joined forces to create On Repeat, each artist’s first track release of 2023.
Sweet, lilting and slightly despairing, On Repeat is a melodic complaint about being stuck in a rut.

On a bed of sparkling neo-soul guitar and bass, and a gentle jazz beat, Benjamino’s buttery brogue weaves into meadowhip’s gossamer inflections, lending a soothing, multidimensional vocal-scape to an age-old question - “Is this really all there is to life?”. The self-deprecating lyrics and shimmering alt-pop/R&B hooks are supported by layers of airy harmonies and punctuated by the magical performance of Italian jazz flautist, Donata Greco. The result: a grooving, breezy autumnal track, with the perfect amount of whimsy.

Written at Drop Studios in Wollongong, and produced by LA-based alt-jazz hero Mark EvichOn Repeat is a collab that Benjamino and meadowhip have been planning for quite some time.

The Wollongong music scene doesn’t have many alt pop/R&B players in it, so working with meadowhip gave me a fresh opportunity to delve into some more creative chord progressions and melody choices than I might not have felt comfortable with before. Plus, I’ve always disliked songs that were painfully earnest, so it made a lot of sense to work with someone who enjoys as much irony as I do. - Benjamino

With lyrics like “I wouldn’t mind giving up this season / Unsubscribe and start anew”On Repeat is a proprietary blend of meadowhip and Benjamino’s trademark metaphor-drenched, but light hearted introspection. I think we have a fairly similar approach to writing - we both like a poetic device, and to toe the line between genuine and sarcastic. And the track ended up being a pretty balanced mix of my alt-R&B tendencies and Benjamino’s indie soul style. We’ve been referring to it as our “shoulder season” song - a song for life’s transitional moments. It’s giving autumn, it’s giving spring, it’s giving existential crisis. - meadowhip
