Beside the Birrarung Bird Survey in Westgate Park

Join our regular Beside the Birrarung Bird Survey at Westgate Park and discover the incredible diversity of birdlife found along the Birrarung.

As you explore the park's mostly flat walking trails around the saltwater and freshwater lakes, you'll have the opportunity to spot a wide variety of local and migratory birds. More than 50 bird species are regularly recorded during each survey, including waterfowl, pardalotes, Superb Fairy-wrens, spoonbills and, if you're lucky, birds of prey soaring overhead.

This guided survey is suitable for anyone with an interest in birds, from beginners to experienced birdwatchers.

Meeting point: 9.00 am at the BBQ area inside the Todd Road entrance to Westgate Park, near the public toilets. The walk concludes at approximately 12.00 pm.

Please bring binoculars if you have them, along with a water bottle and, if you're a photographer, a telephoto camera. We also recommend wearing a hat, sunscreen, sturdy enclosed shoes and mosquito repellent.

This is an outdoor event and will proceed in suitable weather conditions.

• Most Riverfest events are free, and many have limited places with long waitlists. Please only book if you're confident you can attend, so others don't miss out. Bookings are limited to 2 tickets for smaller events and 4 tickets for larger events.

Please note: Most of the walk (approximately 80%) takes place on accessible, formed paths. Access to some birdwatching locations requires travelling over uneven or unsealed ground. If you have specific accessibility requirements, please contact the event host before booking.
