Event description

Lucy Macourt (violin) and Katharine Day (piano) join forces to present Between Heaven and Earth, a diverse and deeply expressive program for violin and piano that explores music shaped by faith, love, conflict, and reflection.

  • It opens with Biber’s Rosary Sonata No. 1 – The Annunciation, an intense meditation on the conception of Christ.

  • From there, Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major offers a lyrical, heartfelt portrait of love, written as a wedding gift for violinist Eugène Ysaÿe and full of warmth and intimacy.

  • Prokofiev’s Violin Sonata No. 2, adapted from a flute sonata at the encouragement of David Oistrakh during the Second World War, blends classical clarity with darker undercurrents — graceful, yet edged with unease.

  • The concert will be completed with Sally Greenaway's three Poems. Greenaway's Poems for cello and piano (arranged here for violin) are inspired by Reynaldo Hahn’s French melodié pieces. These short, finely drawn pieces evoke tenderness, stillness, and sorrow, with piano textures that echo the shimmer and pulse of Philip Glass.
