Beyond BAL: Innovative bushfire resilient homes
Event description
As part of ongoing work to support communities rebuilding after bushfire, Renew is showcasing homes that exemplify resilient design elements and building practices that extend the understanding of best practice beyond the complicated and variable (BAL) Bushfire Attack Level rating system.
In the Beyond BAL event series, we're speaking to the people who designed, built, or live in these homes. Join us to hear how you can make your home or future build as resilient as possible this fire season.Â
In this session we'll be exploring bushfire resilient homes that showcase innovative design, with a presentation about each home and then a panel discussion to follow. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience.Â
Featuring:
Simon Anderson, Anderson Architecture
Simon will be discussing The Off-Grid FZ House. There’s a lot to learn and admire in this small weekender located in a bushland setting within the Blue Mountains, showcasing durable, bushfire-fire resilient construction materials and innovation in the use of operable shutters.
Ingrid Donald, Ingrid Donald Architects
Ingrid will be discussing Evans Lookout, a recycled brick home near the Blue Mountains scenic escarpment that has dealt with ecology, siting challenges, liveability, affordability and bushfire hazard extremely well.
Sarah Moir, H+H ARCHITECTS
Sarah will be discussing Lowlands Residence, a 2018 renovation which saw a coastal beach shack in Western Australia largely rebuilt for enhanced sustainability and bushfire protection. Only an additional 22 m2 was added to the original modest 105 m2, but with flair and skill it’s become far more liveable and safer at a modest cost.
Nigel Bell, ECOdesign Architects
Nigel is a the principle architect of ECOdesign Architects and an expert in bushfire resilient design. He has worked extensively with Renew as part of the Green Rebuild Toolkit, and is the project lead on the Beyond BAL project.
