Degrowth Aotearoa New Zealand (DANZ) in collaboration with Grant Thornton would like to present Beyond Growth Tāmaki Makaurau 2023. Building upon the education of the 2022 Degrowth event and Europe's Beyond Growth conference, this event aims to explore 4 specific topics.
Our afternoon of diverse conversations will be guided by Tori McNoe (Te Awawa, Ngāti Tahu/ Ngāti Whaoa/ Ngāti Ruakawa/ Pākeha) and Director & Poutaki Hononga - Commercialisation Development and board member of the Auckland Climate Festival.
Degrowth vs Green Growth - understanding the future trajectories with Jennifer Wilkins
Jennifer Wilkins is a NZ-based researcher, writer and consultant who focuses on the rapidly rising idea of economic degrowth and translating this to a business and investor audience. She will outline the trajectories between green growth and degrowth.

Our group will be guided by a diverse range of Maori/indigenous representation to discuss the Tikanga Māori developed by tangata whenua and other Pasifica/global south/ indigenous world views incorporating practices and values around culture, gender, custom and ethics for people and planet. This collaborative effort seeks to incorporate indigenous perspectives and values into the concept of degrowth, emphasizing the importance of cultural diversity in shaping sustainable strategies.
Positive taxation conversations - a conversation with Gareth Hughes (WEALL NZ) & Denise Paterson (Grant Thornton - Tax Specialist)
The final significant focus of this event will be on reengaging and reimagining taxation as a means to foster equity and positive societal impacts. Our panel will identify approaches that can benefit all members of society and contribute to the overall well-being of both the economy and the environment. By understanding services, budgets and costs, constructive conversations can be had around promoting fairness and inclusivity. This event aims to generate ideas that can reshape the narrative around taxation and its potential for positive change.
Aotearoa’s Renewable Future - a workshop by Dark Green Aotearoa
The purpose of this workshop is to expand your energy literacy and explore transitional pathways to a fossil carbon free future.
This will be an interactive, exploratory and educational workshop.
