Event description

Every month in winter, Big Dead will be playing one of their favourite little rooms in Brisbane. The group will be drawing from their back catalogue, improvising and showcasing their newest work alongside some of their favourite bands in Brisbane.

This Brisbane five piece bring a kind of world-weary abandon to their particular brand of jazz-infused rock. Big Dead’s music evokes that sombre, heavy-lidded romantic postlude - mementos more sedated slow burn than agitated recollection. At the heart of Big Dead is a take-no-prisoners musical ambition, eager to hurl the listener from chaos through to catharsis.  Formed in 2012 in Brisbane Big Dead has released several EPs Eudaemonia, Shell and the upcoming Former Self and their debut LP Bone White Branches through Australian label Art As Catharsis.

The [band’s] music can’t be unambiguously defined...crafting songs that sound foreign yet somehow feel familiar. In short: absolute, lively and super rich psychedelia meeting melancholic vocals and dream pop compositions”  - Lbandzi (PL)

“...I don’t feel as though I have the right words to do Bone White Branches justice. The best way that I can de- scribe it is that it’s sublime.”- Culture Eater (AU)

“As eagerly expected, the album then comes with an impressive longing and melancholy, which draws its energies from a crossover of cinematic jazz and art rock...canvases that have not yet existed in the necessary dimensions” - Betreutes Proggen (DE)

Magic City Counterpoint, a duo comprised of Madeleine Cocolas and Chris Perren, create evocative and textural electronic music. Each artist initially admired the other's work from afar, with Cocolas producing piano-driven ambient music in Seattle and New York, and Perren making a name for himself in modern composition. They met in 2018 and quickly bonded over their shared experiences as composers and parents, leading to a collaboration that produced a unique sound greater than the sum of their individual styles.

Their creative process involves exchanging files with minimal verbal discussion and a commitment to no preciousness or hesitation. Their music, crafted during stolen moments as their children sleep, features Cocolas' ethereal vocal layering alongside earthy analog textures. Drawing comparisons to Holly Herndon, Julianna Barwick, How To Dress Well, and Boards of Canada, their debut EP, Dialogue, will be a hybrid music release and game developed in collaboration with award-winning indie game designers Fuzzy Ghost.

Doors 7:30pm.

$20 on the door.
