    BIJF and MNM Presents: Strange Attractors

    Saturday, October 19th at It’s Still a Secret (South Brisbane) - Doors at 7pm, Music from 7:30 - $20 entry

    -

    MADE NOW MUSIC and the Brisbane International Jazz Festival are proud to present the launch of the exciting new group STRANGE ATTRACTORS (featuring Jess Green and Dylan van der Schyff)! This dynamic duo will be traveling from interstate to showcase their innovative improvisational soundscapes, celebrating the release of their new album via MNM.

    Joining them for this rare and unmissable event is Brisbane-grown (now internationally roaming) monolith/juggernaut/flagship ensemble MILTON MAN GOGH, the internationally acclaimed prog-jazz powerhouse, fresh off their prestigious Banff residency. This unique double bill is a genuinely singular event that is not to be missed.Β

    // STRANGE ATTRACTORS

    Jess green and Dylan van der Schyff are STRANGE ATTRACTORS. The music is exuberant and complex – at times cinematic, at times cheeky and raucous. These are real-time conversations in sound and emotion, evoking free jazz, free improvisation, ambient and drone music, and, occasionally, shades of 90’s grunge rock.

    The name Strange Attractors is borrowed from the mathematics of complex systems. It describes the dynamic forces that pull systems in chaos towards coordination, but never in the same way twice. This term is used in the study of grand complex systems such as planetary orbits, flocking birds, swarming insects, and weather systems. Strange Attractors describes unpredictable pattern formation in nature and therefore provides a delightful metaphor for the free-wheeling constellations of energy in these pieces.

    // Due to unforseen circumstances SHAMIN will be playing instead of Milton Man Gogh

    SHAMIN is an experimental jazz duo based in Brisbane, Australia. The group formed off the back of a recording session for Martin Kay’s Forage and explores original composition, unconventional rhythm and timbre drawing influence from Matt Mitchell, David Binney, Dan Weiss, Mark Guiliana, Kate Gentile, Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey to list a few.
    Comprised of Sophie Min and Benjamin Shannon, SHAMIN was established in 2018 and released their debut album β€˜Fine Gnaw’ in April 2019 to local and international acclaim. The duo has a penchant for irregular form, rhythm and rich harmony juxtaposed against expansive improvisational passages and extended techniques. SHAMIN have performed at venues around Australia including the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, Sydney Women’s International Jazz Festival, Jazzlab, Bohemian Grove, JMI and The Junk Bar. The band was recently shortlisted for the 2023 Art Music Awards in the Performance of the Year Jazz and Improvised Music Category.
