A cross-disciplinary seminar considering how research, content, design, and development weave together to create bilingual websites.

What does it take to create a website that supports te reo Māori to thrive? In this cross-disciplinary seminar, Springload Te Pipītanga’s researchers, content strategists, designers, and developers will present and discuss approaches to creating bilingual websites, and how they collaborate with each other and others to make them. They’ll share examples of their mahi and learnings they’ve gathered along the way.

This event will be presented at Springload Te Pipītanga and livestreamed. This is a free event, however due to capacity reservations are required. If you wish to watch online, please reserve a livestream ticket so we can send the link to you.

Speakers

Gisela de la Villa | Back-end Director

Originally from Argentina, Gisela is a code champion and a perfectionist with an eye for detail. She is a cross-disciplinary technical expert with deep experience in Python and a compassionate people leader. She has a degree in software engineering, and, like many coders, she’s multilingual, but not just in programming languages — she speaks Spanish, German, English, French, Italian, and te reo Māori. Recently at Springload Gisela was the technical lead on the Kōtuia ngā Kete website.

Joe Garlick | Principal Design Lead

Joe has over 20 years experience as a designer, and comes from a print, brand and advertising background. He has worked on a variety of international brands in New Zealand and Europe, including Levi’s, Air New Zealand, Nike, and Yamaha. Making the switch to digital in 2014, he has since become a passionate champion of digital branding, design systems, and user-based research and design. Recently at Springload he was the lead designer for the new Massey University website.

Awatea Randall - Te Ātiawa, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Maniapoto | Kaihoahoa

Awatea is a kaimahi Māori, and tangata whenua nō Te Ātiawa ki Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui rāua kō Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga. He’s passionate about wairua-centred and kaupapa Māori design for creating a sustainable future for our mokopuna. He has education and life experience within te ao Māori, from attending kura kaupapa Māori to creating his own tool to teach people te reo, tikanga, and mātauranga Māori. Recently at Springload he was pou taketake (cultural lead) for the Best-Awards-nominated Kōtuia ngā Kete website.

Virginia Gow | Content Strategy Lead

Large content projects are Virginia’s superpower. Taxonomies and data structures bring her uncanny joy. She can whip a 10,000 plus page website into a navigational breeze. With her Masters in Information Studies, Virginia has worked on the online encyclopedia Te Ara and was Digital Manager at Auckland Museum. A fellowship in New York saw her explore audience-centred digital media in education and museums. Recently at Springload she led the full content redesign and rewrite of the Massey University website.
