Biochar has the potential to play an important role in our response to climate change - the process adds carbon back into our environment, healing our atmosphere, waterways and soils. The Parihaka māra has been given a kiln a couple of years ago to burn dry twigs and branches in a low-oxygen, smoke-free environment, before rapid cooling with water from below.
Through this process, the volatile gasses in the timber are burned off, creating a highly porous, fine-grained charcoal. Lunch will be provided.
