Event description

Peter will describe the area (440 km2) and its most significant sites and the reasons for recognising Ku-ring-gai as a geo-region, a community project initiated by the Friends of Ku-ring-gai Environment (FOKE).

Peter’s talk wraps up the FOKE Ku-ring-gai Geo-region series, with a FOKE fund-raising luncheon that AABR is pleased to support. This series has exposed the bedrock for bushland and aquatic life.

Peter and the other series presenters Dr John Martyn and Angus Robinson are contributors to the 2022 Linnean Society review paper about this fascinating geo-region: https://openjournals.library.sydney.edu.au/index.php/LIN/index

It’s a region where there is much bush regeneration and ecological restoration, as well as a need for invasive weed and species control, and restraint on development.

The Review Paper introduces this geo-region:

The proposed GeoRegion embraces the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, other bushland areas, as well as the coast and estuaries located just north of the city of Sydney. ..the outstanding natural history of the GeoRegion including significant examples of Permo-Triassic sedimentation with evidence of ancient climate change and Jurassic/Cenozoic volcanic activity, together with associated geomorphology, soil genesis, endemic biodiversity, and cultural values. Its preserved ancient land surface supports diverse vegetation communities and the drowned river valleys provide evidence of the continuing impacts of climate change. The strong connection between this Country, its landscape, and its First Peoples is also highlighted.

Talk: 11.45am for 12noon start. Finish at 1pm.

Optional Lunch: 1pm-2.30pm at Roseville Club Bistrot Meet at The Roseville Club, 64 Pacific Hwy, Roseville (at own cost)
