Biodiversity Walk
Description
Celebrate the Centenary of Balls Head Reserve by joining North Sydney Council's Bushland team for a guided walk through one of Sydney Harbour's most prominent bushland reserves.
Meeting on the lawn opposite the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability, participants will explore the diverse vegetation communities of Balls Head Reserve, including Angophora Foreshore Forest, Kunzea Scrub and Disclimax Sandstone Scrub. Along the way, enjoy some of the reserve's most beautiful harbour lookouts, with sweeping views across Sydney Harbour framed by rugged Hawkesbury Sandstone outcrops and the distinctive Sydney Red Gums (Angophora costata) that are a defining feature of the reserve.
Participants will learn about the reserve's ecological history, including the introduction of non-local native species during rehabilitation efforts following extensive timber clearing in the early twentieth century.
The Bushland team will discuss contemporary bushland management practices, including the use of ecological burns to support regeneration and maintain biodiversity. Discover how many Australian plant species depend on fire for flowering, seed release and reproduction.
Keep an eye out for the reserve's distinctive arboreal termite mounds, which provide nesting sites for wildlife including Laughing Kookaburras and Sacred Kingfishers.
Suitable for anyone with an interest in nature, conservation and local history, this walk offers a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the plants, wildlife and management of Balls Head Reserve.
