On Thursday 12 October we welcome you to join us on a bird walk and water bug hunt at Laratinga Wetlands Mt Barker. This will be an excellent family experience where you get to get your hands dirty and learn about nature!

On the bird walk we will waddle around Laratinga Wetlands stopping if we see something interesting or entertaining. On the walk you will get an understanding of what birdwatching is, why it is fun and an understanding about how different habitats suit different birds. The walk we will be doing is called the Rosella Trail, the walk is about 2 kms and may take 45-60 mins. The trail is pram and wheelchair friendly.

The rest of the event time will be spent looking for water bugs. The water bug hunt will be at the water's edge, caution as it may be slippery. We will be taking water samples from the Laratinga Wetlands and have a look at the macroinvertebrates it has to offer. We will be using special equipment to catch and identify what kind of critters we find. The macros are very small so make sure you have your glasses if you need them. If we are lucky, we may see a turtle or catch a yabbie.

We will provide all the equipment needed for the chosen activities such as identification charts to help you out as well as nets and binoculars. Feel free to bring your own binoculars or a camera if you want. You need to provide your own gum boots, good walking shoes, suitable clothing, food for snacks and water.

The event will be led by mentor students of the Youth Environment Council of SA, with support from Green Adelaide education officers. As the event is run by young people, we encourage young people to be the main participants.

Numbers will be limited, so get in quick to avoid missing out! All attendees, including children, must be registered to take part and will receive further information before the event.
