Event description

This two-day weekend field class explores the oases in and around the Anza-Borrego Desert, home to a surprisingly wide variety of bird species. After a Zoom lecture on Tuesday night, the class spends Saturday and Sunday in the field, studying both migrant and resident bird species. Participants will learn about conservation, ecology, natural history, and special adaptations to the harsh desert environment.

  • The lecture portion of this class is held via Zoom.

  • The field portion takes place in and near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

  • Anyone may attend! Some prior birding knowledge may be helpful, but is not required.

  • Participants are responsible for the entry cost for Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

  • No lodging, meals, or equipment is provided. If camping, please visit reservecalifornia.com to book your campsite in advance.

  • Participants caravan in their personal vehicles. Carpooling is encouraged.

Activity level: This class is moderate. It requires less than 5 miles of walking with limited elevation gain on somewhat variable terrain and/or more than one hour outdoors in the elements.

Required items for participants:

  • Water, between 3 and 4 liters per person for a full day outing

  • Food and snacks, easily packed and eaten in the field (please leave no trace)

  • Closed-toe athletic shoes or hiking boots (no sandals, not even hiking sandals!)

  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen; light-colored, long-sleeved shirts are recommended and very effective on hot days

  • Warm layers for cooler mornings/evenings (it can be surprisingly cold!)

  • Backpack to carry food, water, and any personal items you need for the day

  • Binoculars

Participants earn 1.5 units toward a Desert Ecology & Conservation Certificate. Eligible Desert Institute classes can be taken for fun or for credit toward a certificate. To earn the certificate, you must complete 12 units of eligible classes within three years. We offer a variety of classes each season! The certificate is available through UCR Extension. You do not need to be a current student in any academic program to earn the certificate. Units do not contribute to any academic degree.

Any other pertinent information: Food and lodging are not included. Please book or reserve your campsite ahead of time.
