Practical skills to support young people with confidence

About the course

The Blended Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course builds the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support adolescents who may be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.

Participants learn how to recognise warning signs, start supportive conversations, and respond using a practical, evidence-based Action Plan, until appropriate professional help is in place or the situation stabilises.

The course is grounded in national MHFA guidelines, developed through expert consensus involving people with lived experience and mental health professionals.

  • Anxiety

  • Eating disorders

  • Psychosis

  • Substance use problems

Mental health crises covered

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Non-suicidal self-injury

  • Panic attacks

  • Traumatic events

  • Severe psychotic states

  • Severe effects of alcohol or other drug use

  • Aggressive behaviours


How the blended course works

This blended format combines flexible self-paced learning with live, instructor-led sessions.

Component 1: Self-paced eLearning
  • Approximately 4 hours

  • 10 interactive modules

  • Completed online before the live sessions

  • Includes an eLearning completion certificate

Component 2: Live instructor-led sessions
  • Three interactive online sessions (2.5 hours each)

  • Delivered via Zoom by an accredited Youth MHFA Instructor

  • Focuses on discussion, real-world scenarios, and skills practice

  • Youth workers and community professionals

  • Adults who support or work with young people

No previous mental health training is required.


Accreditation

After completing both components, participants may complete an online assessment to receive Youth Mental Health First Aid Accreditation, recognised nationally.

  • Upon registration, participants receive:

    • An eLearning voucher code

    • A manual coupon

  • Zoom details for the live sessions are sent after completion of the eLearning component
