Blind Citizens WA back in the South West

Following up from the visit last year, BCWA will return to Bunbury to help strengthen peer support and advocacy for people who are blind and vision impaired in WA’s great Southwest!

Is there something you really want to happen in Bunbury? Regular peer support meetings, or certain sport or recreational activities, a better public transport service? Whatever you may desire, we will share some practical advocacy tools that have made things happen in Perth and Albany.

This event is the perfect opportunity to meet people living with vision impairment in a relaxed setting, enjoy some light refreshments and a free lunch. Partners, family, friends and support workers all welcome.

Members of Blind Citizens WA, including Chair of Blind Citizens WA Zel Iscel and Project Officer Isenia, would love for you to join them for a coffee and chat to learn more about their advocacy work. You can also learn about blind sports on offer. Blind sports groups are a great way to grow your friendship circles, improve your fitness and mental health.

The support organisation aims to achieve equity and equality for people with low or no vision. The informal catch-up is part of Blind Citizens WA’s BEACON project. It stands for Blindness Empowerment Across Communities Outreach Network.

It’s also an opportunity to meet VisAbility's Youth Support Officer Ryan Honschooten. He can outline the wide range of VisAbility support services and therapies to people living in the South West.

Speaking at the event will be the President of Blind Golf Western Australia and Vice President of Blind Cricket Western Australia, David Martin.

David’s presentation centres on technology available to support people with vision impairment - the use of Soundscape, Seeing AI and voice over technology which can be useful in a sporting environment. He’ll also discuss the importance of sound devices in sporting balls and how they all differ.

Activities on the day:

Advocacy tools workshop from 10:00am to 12:00 pm

Lunch from 12:00pm – 1:00 pm.

Sports and recreation activities as part of Blind Sports WA Come and Try Day, from 1:00pm – 4:00 pm (sports include: tennis, soccer and goalball). There will also be the opportunity to use a practice golf net for any would-be golfers.
