The False Prophet, the Wicked Servant and Divine Comfort
Event description
Early Baroque Music Performed by an Excellent Ensemble in an Intimate Chamber Music Venue
"And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet." (Rev. 16:13)
Geisliche Konzerte (Spiritual concertos) are a 17th century German genre of sacred music using settings of religious texts for vocal soloists and instrumental forces. They bring to sedate Protestant Chorales the dramatic early baroque Italian cantata style, with its contrapuntal and virtuosic instrumental writing.
Johann Rudolph Ahle (1625-1673) dedicated many compositions to this form. The excellent BlockSounds Recorder Ensemble will be joined in Gunning's intimate and atmospheric chamber music venue by Maartje Sevenster, Greta Claringbould and Frank den Hartog (singers), with Ariana Odermatt (harpsichord) and Rachel Walker (gamba) on continuo to perform works by Ahle and his contemporaries Heinrich Shutz, Johann Schein, Samuel Scheidt and Johann Schmelzer.
Visiting concert goers can also enjoy browsing Gunning's art, craft and antique outlets and the Pye Cottage museum before the event. A post-concert dining option is also available the the Telegraph Hotel Bistro.
