Boating on the Lake – Summer Skills Refresher with Coastguard Queenstown
Event description
Boating on the Lake? We’ve Got You Covered
Lakes might look calm compared to the sea, but they can still turn tricky fast. Strong winds, sudden changes, crowded summer days, and cold water all bring their own risks – and every year, even experienced boaties get caught out.
That’s why we’re running a special Boating on the Lake session in Queenstown – a fun and interactive refresher to get you ready for summer.
Hosted by Coastguard Queenstown, this isn’t your average safety lecture. It’s relaxed, social, and packed with practical tips, friendly competition, and a few laughs along the way.
What to expect on the night:
Quick-fire reminders on the stuff that really matters:
Pre-season checks – making sure you and your boat are lake-ready.
Reading the conditions and knowing when not to head out.
Lifejackets, comms, and gear – the essentials that save lives.
What to do if it all goes wrong.
Local knowledge from Coastguard skippers who know the lake inside out.
A boating quiz – test your knowledge, win bragging rights (and maybe a spot prize or two).
Plenty of time for questions, stories, and a bit of banter with other boaties.
Why it’s worth your time:
Every year, people underestimate our lakes and end up in trouble – cold water shock, sudden capsizes, or simple mistakes.
A quick refresher now could make the difference when it counts.
Whether you’re brand new to boating or have been around since the days of two-stroke outboards, there’s always something to pick up (and maybe something you can share too).
So gather your crew, brush up on your boating smarts, and join us for a night that’s as fun as it is useful.
