BODY AS WORK/HOARDER CULTURE - ZOE FANNING

Hoarder Culture/Body as Work is a farewell of sorts: an exhibition, an installation, an estate sale, a memoir, a love letter and a home.

Two and a half years ago, Zoe Fanning retired from the real world and fell in love with the magic of being human. Leaving working and living in Brisbane city with no job, no plan and a diagnosis of cervical dysplasia, she refused pre-emptive surgery and chose to listen to her body, following her sacral along the Sunshine Coast before settling into a mountain home in Maleny a year ago and a beachside studio at Lantana shortly thereafter. Refusing to compromise health for a career, she has chosen living in service to the cervix as her work. Having spent the past five years painting with her menstrual blood synthesized with a fascination with where fine arts meets trash, she explores themes of identity, duality, physicality and philosophy through self portraiture and the written word. In spending this past year focused on grounding in both her internal and external environments, her creative practice surrounds her, spans across disciplines and bleeds into her demeanour. An eternal nester, she builds a home wherever she goes and after nine months of incubation at Lantana, she is ready to leave the studio womb for a more transitory life.

This exhibition sees the gallery become her home as a closing ritual: a storied store of personalities past in a future-facing retrospective. Her body of work, titled Body as Work, shares paintings, poems and sacrifices of old selves to make space for that which is to come. Enamoured by collecting and creating beautiful, weird and wonderful things, this collection of her creations and her curated life offers her library of philosophy, eros and the esoteric, hand-painted clothing, preloved clothing, hand-made jewellery and collected adornments ready to be shed in rebirth from her world into yours for viewing and purchase.

Zoe works with both traditional and slightly unorthodox materials to explore what it means to be in a human body on this earth. Focusing on the form and the metaphysical, she uses endometrium, “real” paint and existential rambling to invoke poeticised subtle activism. She bridges spirit and matter in a gently chaotic and whimsical whirlwind of self-portraiture, rebirthed clothing, bricolage and moving with whatever else her body feels compelled to create.

ACCESS to LANTANA Space: Unfortunately the main entrance is not easily wheelchair accessible due to a small 20cm step. We are able to facilitate access to the space through the side roller door. TRANSPORT & PARKING: Street parking along Allen Street is available and we recommend car pooling where possible to reduce impact on our neighbours and the environment. Please be conscious to not block any driveways or create excessive noise when attending or leaving the venue. Caloundra Bus Interchange is a 30min walk or 5min Uber from the venue with accessible bus routes along Queen Street, William Street and Edmund Street with the 600, 602 and 607. We recommend visiting translink.
