Event description

Body Weather Naarm Term 1 2025    7-week Training series

Tuesdays 4th Feb – 18th March, 2025

Dancehouse 150 Princes St, Carlton North

Start the year with Body Weather training to increase your fitness and possibilities for movement, bringing your attention to your body in nuanced and fascinating ways. Led by dance artist and experienced Body Weather facilitator Gretel Taylor, sessions include an MB (Mind/Body, Muscle/Bone) physical workout; and/or sensory and imagery-focused exercises and approaches to movement improvisation.

Body Weather is a comprehensive approach to training and performance that investigates the intersections of bodies and their environments. Aware of our context as we move from Biderap, the hot dry season, to Iuk (eel season) according to the Kulin Nation's calendar, let's tune in to our bodies, get strong and focused, and explore how we physically articulate in relation to space.

The term and philosophical basis for Body Weather was founded in the 1980s in Japan by dancer Min Tanaka and further developed by proponents worldwide.

New and experienced Body Weather practitioners all welcome.

Gretel Taylor trained at Min Tanaka’s Body Weather Farm in Japan in 1999 and 2000 which informed her performance, teaching and research. Gretel developed an improvisational ‘locating’ practice as a mode of relating to place during her PhD (2009) and as an ongoing inquiry as a site-responsive performance artist. She has taught Dance and Performance at Deakin, RMIT, Monash and Victoria University, as well as regularly at Dancehouse. She is lead Artist/Curator at BodyPlaceProject. www.bodyplaceproject.com

Suitable for dancers, performers and anyone interested in expanding body-based awareness. The format accommodates both experienced Body Weather practitioners and ‘newbies’.
