Event description

Join us on Friday May 16 at 6PM as we welcome Dr Gillian Deakin to discuss her latest release - What the Hell is Wrong With Me?

About the Book

What happens when your symptoms don’t fit into a tidy medical diagnosis?

Whether it’s pain, weakness, seizures, fatigue, you lose consciousness or are unable to speak - it can be incredibly disabling, leaving many of us feeling hopeless and alone.

‘These symptoms have been called many things; we are now calling them “functional”.

As a family physician, Dr Gillian Deakin has treated hundreds of patients with functional conditions such as unexplained pain, fatigue, weakness and many other symptoms where all medical tests are normal. Using her case studies, Dr Deakin provides a sound, medically proven means to restore your health.

What the Hell is Wrong with Me? helps you make sense of your experience while revealing what the experts know about your unexplained symptoms and what you can do to recover from them. Most importantly though, this book is your guide to feeling well again!

About the Author

Dr Gillian Deakin has been studying and working in medicine for over forty years, having graduated from the University of Sydney.

She has worked as a doctor in Sydney and the outback, where she met her first husband, while working as a film set doctor.

She completed her doctorate degree (MD) at Monash University, after wintering as the medical officer at Davis, a research station on Antarctica.

On her return, Dr Deakin undertook a Masters Degree in Public Health at the University of Sydney, to explore the causes of illness beyond the disease model, where it became clear that illnesses arise when our situation is stressful, whether social, economic, cultural or physical.

After a year running an aid program on the remote Pacific islands of Kiribati, she returned to general practice in Bondi.

She has worked in her Bondi general practice since 1991 and has the privilege of being part of the lives of families there.

While keeping a sound clinical knowledge of orthodox medicine as supervisor of general practice registrars and examiner at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, she broadened her understanding of health through studies in nutrition, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, lifestyle medicine and clinical hypnotherapy.

Dr Gillian Deakin lives in Sydney with her second husband and takes an active part in the lives of her grandchildren.
