Regional Energy Transitions in Australia: From impossible to possible - Book launch

There’s never been a more important time in Australia’s history to learn from the regions and leaders driving the energy transition to net zero. While the transition from fossil fuel electricity generation to renewable energy is well underway, many challenges remain. This event will explore the experience of the transition in five of Australia’s key coal regions, including our very own Hunter Valley. These insights are captured in the newly published book: Regional Energy Transitions: From impossible to possible.

Here in Newcastle, speakers will explore how regional leaders across Australia continue to navigate complex energy politics, highlighting key lessons from the last decade of rapid change.

Dr Amanda Cahill is co-editor of the book and CEO of The Next Economy. Over the last decade, Amanda has supported government, industry, workers and community groups to understand and manage the energy transition across Queensland, the Hunter Valley, the Latrobe Valley and the Northern Territory.

Associate Professor Liam Phelan is co-author of the Hunter chapter of the book's and a leading just transitions researcher at the University of Newcastle. He has a long-standing research engagement at the nexus of climate change, finance, human rights, and ecological sustainability.

Warrick Jordan is a co-author of the Hunter chapter of the book's and is a Policy Specialist at the Australian Climate and Biodiversity Foundation. He specialises in analysis of economic, social and environmental outcomes and changes in regional areas.

Professor Kate Senior is the Acting Director for The Institute for the Regional Futures at the University of Newcastle and will launch the book, followed by a Panel discussion.

Panel speakers will explore how regional leaders across Australia continue to navigate complex energy challenges, highlighting key lessons from the last decade of rapid change. The Panel will feature representatives of key community organisations working for just energy transitions in the Hunter: Hunter Jobs Alliance, Hunter Community Alliance, and Hunter Renewal.

Come and be part of an open and grounded conversation about where the energy transition is at in the Hunter and nationally, the challenges that remain, and what regions need to better manage the impacts and capture the benefits for the long term.

6pm for a 6.30pm start. The panel discussion will include an opportunity for questions from the audience. Light refreshments provided. The venue is accessible.
