Book Launch – Letters to Paulo Freire: Radical Dialogues on Democratic Education and Courage by Dr Jorge Knijnik
Description
This interactive book launch of Letters to Paulo Freire: Radical Dialogues on Democratic Education and Courage (Springer, 2026) is inspired by Paulo Freire’s own letter-writing tradition as a form of dialogue, reflection, and pedagogical engagement. Throughout his work, Freire used letters not merely as a literary device but as a means of creating conversation, nurturing critical reflection, and connecting personal experience to broader social and political questions. Building on this tradition, the session offers a participatory space in which participants can engage with Freire’s legacy through dialogue, collective reflection, and writing. Rather than a conventional book launch or author presentation, the session invites participants to explore the contemporary significance of democratic education, critical pedagogy, courage and hope.

The session seeks to demonstrate dialogue as a democratic and knowledge-generating practice rather than simply discussing it as a theoretical concept. The session will conclude with the collaborative drafting of a short Manifesto for Democratic Education, identifying principles, commitments, and aspirations for educators, researchers, students, and communities seeking to strengthen democratic life through education. In this way, participants will contribute not only their reflections but also to a collective statement of hope, solidarity, and democratic commitment.
