    ABOUT THE BOOK

Race Mathews: A Life in Politics is the biography of a politician, academic, author and reformer, tracing the life of Race from childhood and his political awakenings to working for fellow Fabian and great mentor, Gough Whitlam, in ‘the most tumultuous, and by far the most rewarding’ time of his career.

“This book chronicles Race Mathews’ lifelong dedication to building a better society and a better Labor Party... No one but Iola Mathews could have written about Race’s life with such insight, understanding and wisdom”

    - The Hon John Faulkner, former Senator for NSW and Cabinet Minister in the Keating, Rudd and Gillard governments, Chair of the Whitlam Institute Board

“Unerring optimism, infectious enthusiasm, boundless energy, and a belief in the power of people, ideas, and community as the heartbeat of progressive politics.”

    - Emeritus Professor Jenny Hocking
