About the book:

This book brings together many threads of the emergence of Youth Work in Aotearoa New Zealand into a rich tapestry of a profession rooted in the stories of its people. It takes us on a journey through the history of Youth Work from pre-European methods where Tangata Whenua developed young people, including rights of passage, through to 2025. The book is a mix of researched history and the author's own narrative.

This book has been funded by The Wayne Francis Charitable Trust and published by Ara Taiohi.

About the Author:

John Harrington (ONZM)

John has worked in the youth sector for over 40 years as a volunteer/paid Youth Worker. John is a pioneer in the youth development sector. He led the establishment of Te Ora Hou in Christchurch, Cross Over Trust, the Hoon Hay Youth Centre, and led the formation of the National Youth Workers Network Aotearoa. For 16 years, John worked for the Canterbury Youth Workers Collective, developing Youth Work in Canterbury, including the Canterbury Youth Workers Code of Ethics, which led to the development of a nationwide Code of Ethics for Youth Work in Aotearoa. John went on to manage the Scope Review tool under the Canterbury Youth Workers Collective for 6 years and then founded the Scope Aotearoa Charitable Trust to deliver reviews nationwide. John has sat on a wide range of industry leadership and advisory groups, sharing his expertise in the service of Youth Workers and Young People. John was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to youth in the Queen’s New Year's Honours List of 2017. John and his wife Vicki live in Rolleston, Waikirikiri Selwyn. They have three adult children Daniel, Yasmin and Jacob.
