Australia Calling: The ABC Radio Australia Story Book Launch with Dr. Phil Kafcaloudes
Event description
Phil Kafcaloudes, author and broadcast journalist, presented the breakfast program on the ABC’s Radio Australia for nine years, broadcasting across the Pacific and Asia. He worked in ABC radio and television in 12 countries and hosted the corporation’s first English language program from China.
Join ABC Ballarat reporter Rochelle Kirkham in conversation with Phil to explore the intriguing story of the ABC’s Radio Australia which has now broadcast for 90 years. Find out how it was founded in the early days of WWII as an anti-propaganda weapon, and it went on to have a range of post-war purposes, from advertising Australia’s Post-war Immigration Scheme to serving an extraordinary part in the flight to the moon. In the process, ABC Radio Australia earned a reputation as a ground-breaking service that was so fast in its news-gathering that even the CIA listened to it because it was faster than its own intelligence operations!
In partnership with ABC Friends Ballarat.
