St Paul's Orthodox Book Club
Description
Join us for St Paul's Orthodox Book Club, a welcoming and engaging gathering for anyone interested in exploring the riches of the Orthodox Christian faith through reading, discussion, fellowship, and a shared meal.
This month we're reading The Mind of the Early Church: The Fathers Who Shaped Christianity by Eugene W. Gotwalt, PhD. In this accessible introduction to the Church Fathers, we encounter the great saints, theologians, bishops, ascetics, and defenders of the faith who helped preserve and articulate the apostolic tradition handed down from Christ and His Apostles.
Far more than historical figures, the Fathers of the Church are living witnesses to the Orthodox faith. Their writings reveal how the earliest generations of Christians understood Holy Scripture, worshipped God, defended the truth against heresy, and pursued the Christian life as a path of union with Christ. Through their example, we gain a deeper appreciation of the mind of the Church and the continuity of Orthodox Christianity from the apostolic age to the present day.
Whether you are new to the Church Fathers or have spent years reading them, this book provides an excellent opportunity to discover how their wisdom continues to illuminate the challenges and questions facing Christians today.
Our book club is not simply a lecture or discussion group. Throughout the afternoon we include a variety of interactive activities designed to bring the material to life, including our famous True or False challenge, multiple-choice definition games, historical scenarios, role plays, short debates, and other group activities. These provide an enjoyable way to deepen our understanding of the faith while sharing a few laughs along the way.
We'll gather at 3:30pm for light refreshments, tea, coffee, and fellowship before commencing the discussion. A suggested donation of $5 or more is appreciated to assist with catering costs.
This book club is an informal gathering of Orthodox Christians, inquirers, and anyone interested in learning more about the Christian faith. While our discussions will draw upon Orthodox teaching and tradition, they are intended as opportunities for shared learning and reflection rather than formal instruction. Participants are encouraged to engage respectfully, ask questions freely, and contribute their insights. For pastoral guidance, spiritual direction, or authoritative theological advice, attendees should consult their local Orthodox priest.
Please RSVP so we can plan appropriately for catering and seating. We look forward to learning from the Fathers together and discovering how their witness continues to guide the Church today.
