Books by the Birrarung

Slow down, unplug and share the simple joy of stories by the river.

Designed for children aged 0–6 years and their loved adult, this gentle riverside storytime invites families to listen to beautiful picture books inspired by rivers, nature and the world around us—all while immersed in the peaceful surroundings of the Birrarung.

Hosted by Peta, a passionate lover of literature, veterinarian and early childhood education student, this experience celebrates the power of books to spark curiosity, nurture imagination and foster meaningful connections. With a deep love for the Birrarung as a living entity, Peta warmly invites families to experience the magic of storytelling in nature.

Come along to connect with your child, the river and the joy of sharing stories together, without a screen in sight.

• Most Riverfest events are free, and many have limited places with long waitlists. Please only book if you're confident you can attend, so others don't miss out. Bookings are limited to 2 tickets for smaller events and 4 tickets for larger events.
  

• Can't make it? Please cancel your ticket by opening your Humanitix confirmation email and selecting 'Manage Order'. Your place will then be released to someone on the waitlist. If you need assistance, contact us by email: riverfest@yarrariver.org.au
  

• Events will proceed unless severe weather or other unforeseen circumstances require a change. If this happens, registered participants will be notified by email.

• Getting there: From the Warringal Park Oval Carpark, it's a gentle 3–5 minute walk along a gravel path. You'll find us gathered under the beautiful oak trees.

• Seating: Storytime will take place on a picnic rug with cushions. If you would prefer a chair, please feel free to bring your own. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising their children throughout the event.

• Toilets: Public toilets are available at both Possum Hollow Playground and Warringal Park Oval.

• Make a morning of it: Before or after the event, you're welcome to enjoy a stroll along Birrarung or spend some time at the nearby Possum Hollow Playground.

• Please take care: The paths leading down to the river can become muddy and slippery, particularly after wet weather. If you choose to visit the river before or after the event, please take extra care and supervise children closely.
