Books@Stones event: Translating Emma by Jules Mead
Event description
Join us on Tuesday 12 August for a special in-conversation event with Jules Mead and Bianca Millroy, discussing Jules' debut YA novel, Translating Emma.
I couldn't breathe. My skin prickled with sweat, and I started to feel dizzy. My body betraying me. Again.
Emma had a plan: play touch footy and maybe even go pro. By now, the pain from her broken ankle should be gone. But it hasn't... it's only getting worse, taking over her life. She's stuck. Unable to run, unable to escape the pain, and losing everything that once mattered. Worst of all, nobody understands - not even her best friend, Lily. Then Alex arrives: an outsider who refuses to let Emma give up. But is Alex the answer, or does Emma's music therapist, Billie, hold the key to making sense of it all? As Emma fights to walk again, her pain exposes buried secrets... her own and those of the people she trusts most. To move forward, she'll have to face the truth. But is she ready to confront what's been hidden for so long?
Jules Mead is a Nurse Practitioner who has worked with young people experiencing persistent pain for over twenty years. She has a PhD in creative writing, where she explored the lived experience of pain through a fictional narrative. Jules is interested in transdisciplinary research and establishing links between the creative arts, education and health. Translating Emma is her first work of fiction.
Bianca Millroy is an emerging science writer, podcaster, and editor, based in Meanjin/Brisbane. Her writing appears in Science Write Now, Visible Ink and Writing Queensland as well as the cultural history publication, Brisbane Bookshops. She is currently undertaking PhD studies in science-informed storytelling and co-hosts the Science Write Now podcast, (on which Jules was a guest!).
