Botanic Garden's Sound Trail takes place in the Palm House and The Simpson Shade House over the Nature Festival 1st - 15th of October. Presented in the Palm House, South Australian visual artists Henry Wolff and Heidi Kenyon (with Ben Davidson, ‘Ben Sun’) present an array of initial artefacts that offer insights into the early stages of their collaboration, and the larger project to come.

Henry Wolff

The expanded field photographic works by Henry Wolff seek to stretch and layer time to peer in-between our optical experience of the Palm House. Through experimental analogue processes these works explore the threshold between plants and humans, by encouraging the viewer to look differently at this space and acknowledge the glasshouse as a simulated environment of care. These works have been informed by Henry’s ongoing research into the philosophies and aesthetics of care, along with their burgeoning exploration of altered states of consciousness and perception. This presentation contributes to Henry Wolff’s collaboration with Heidi Kenyon.

Untitled from We shall by morning inherit the earth, 2022. 3mins 53s. Sound developed from electromagnetic sequences generated by pink oyster mushroom, Pleurotus djamor.

This sound work, previously unshown but developed in 2022 as part of a larger project with living fungi, speaks to the deep interconnectivity of mycelium networks, forming symbiotic relationships with plants and communicating across vast distances. It investigates the potential of ecological co-existence to mitigate anxiety, and the creation of ceremonies or rituals that move away from consumption and toward (fungal) collaboration as a gesture of expansive sustainability. This work has informed methodologies of care leading into Heidi Kenyon’s collaboration with Henry Wolff.
