First Steps of Shibari - an introductory workshop

This 90-minute experience is for those wanting to experience the sensuality of rope play.

Let us introduce you to the intimacy of traditional Japanese rope bondage. The art of Kinbaku – sometimes referred to as Shibari – is built around  an exchange between two people: someone tying and someone being bound. Our expert riggers will give you step by step instructions for several simple and practical knots and ties – with an emphasis on developing your connection as a couple as well as safe rope practices. During this experience you will begin by practicing on yourself before moving on to tying with your partner.

Workshop includes:
Introduction to rope and rope safety, the foundational knots and ties needed for shibari including single column ties, double column ties and hitch knots.

Workshop Kit Requirements

You will need to bring the following with you to participate in the workshops:

  • 2-4 x 8m lengths of 6mm rope in either hemp, jute or similar (Rope is available for purchase at point of ticket sale)
  • Rope shears

Demonstrator:

Anchor_rope_ (he/him), has been a rigger for almost 2 decades. He is an educator who loves to share his joy in the subject with his community, having previously run and organised the Newcastle Rope Dojo, and the Hunter Rxx.

Anchor Rope received the bulk of his rope education through Sydney's Studio Kink. A passionate student of Nawashi Kanna, he ties in the Akechi Denki lineage. While this is a more technical style, Anchor Rope feels it is focused at its core on the love, understanding, and sexuality of the bond between participants. Safety and consent are paramount concerns.
