Walk, talk, browse, repeat.

What if your Saturday walk came with bookstores, coffee, pie, a goodie bag and a whole group of people to wander with?

To celebrate the release of Karina May’s new novel, Just a Girl, Actually, Bound to Roam is bringing the book’s Walky Talky walks to life with a very special Paddington bookstore crawl - swapping the fictional app for a real-life day of walking, talking, eating and, naturally, buying books.

We’ll begin at Ampersand Café, where you’ll collect your Walky Talky goodie bag and tote, packed with a few surprises inspired by the day, grab your included coffee and sweet treat, and settle in for an intimate in-conversation with Karina May and fellow romance author Amy Hutton.

Then, we roam.

We’ll make our way through Paddington with stops at Berkelouw Books, Ariel Booksellers and Romancing the Novel, with plenty of time to browse, discover something new and add unnecessarily to your TBR.

With Just a Girl, Actually taking us all the way to the UK, we’re bringing a little bit of Notting Hill to Paddington for lunch at The Imperial Hotel - think classic pub pie with your choice of wine, beer or a non-alcoholic drink.

Once the official crawl wraps up, anyone who wants to keep the afternoon going can join us for optional drinks at The Royal Paddington.

As always, coming solo is very much encouraged. We’ll make the introductions, help everyone settle in and give you plenty of people to walk and talk with throughout the day.

Wander far. Wander safely. And stop for books along the way.

Coming solo?

Please do! Plenty of Bound to Roam guests arrive on their own. We’ll make the introductions at Ampersand and give you a whole group of fellow readers to walk, browse and chat with throughout the day.

Just turn up - we’ll take care of the awkward bit.

Walking for something bigger

The Walky Talky idea might have started on the page, but the conversation around women’s safety is very real.

For this special Bound to Roam, we’re proud to support The RED HEART Campaign, which advocates for women and children impacted by violence and works to keep the conversation around gender-based violence and femicide visible.

$5 from every ticket sold will be donated to The RED HEART Campaign, so while we walk, talk, browse and spend an afternoon together, we’ll also be contributing to work that connects closely with the heart of the Walky Talky story.

FAQs

  • Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. Plenty of Bound to Roam guests come solo. We’ll make introductions at the beginning of the day and help everyone settle in, so you’ll have people to walk, browse and chat with from the start.

  • Are men welcome?

Absolutely. While Walky Talky and our partnership with The RED HEART Campaign bring women’s safety into the conversation, this event is open to everyone. Whether you’re coming to meet Karina, learn more about Just a Girl, Actually, be part of the conversation or simply spend the day exploring bookstores with fellow readers, you’re very welcome.

  • How much walking is involved?

This is a walking bookstore crawl through Paddington, so you’ll need to be comfortable spending parts of the day on foot between stops. We’ll be taking our time (and yes, there’ll be plenty of toilet stops).

Total walking between all stops amounts to roughly 45 minutes.

  • What happens if it rains?

A little rain won’t stop us roaming! The event will go ahead in wet weather, so please dress for the forecast and bring an umbrella if needed.

  • Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

We’ll do our best to accommodate dietary requirements for the included food and drinks. Please let us know about any allergies or dietary requirements when booking.

  • Do I need to have read Just a Girl, Actually?

Not at all. No pre-reading is required - the day is inspired by the book and its Walky Talky walks, but you can come along whether you’ve read it, plan to read it or are discovering it for the first time.

  • Are books included in my ticket?

Books purchased at our bookstore stops aren’t included in your ticket - so come prepared to exercise as much or as little TBR restraint as you like.

You can pickup your copy of Just a Girl, Actually, at our first bookstore stop Berkelouw.
