Discover the art of braided storytelling—the weaving together of two separate tales into a single, powerful performance. In this interactive three-hour workshop, you’ll explore how stories can echo, contrast, and illuminate one another through clever transitions, refrains, and shared themes.

Guided by demonstration pieces, you’ll learn practical techniques for identifying transition points and creating resonance between tales. Working with some short tales in pairs and small groups, you’ll have the chance to design and share your own short braided stories.

Whether you are new to storytelling or an experienced teller, this workshop will expand your repertoire and inspire new ways to craft memorable performances that engage, surprise, and move your audience.

Although living on opposite sides of the world, Christine and Susan Ida have collaborated on creating online braided storytelling performances. In the workshop, they invite participants to explore the challenges and delights of working together to craft a shared braided story.

Christine Carlton, Australian Storyteller and Educator has worked for more than 40 years throughout Australia, New Zealand, USA and Asia, conducting teacher in-service programs, storytelling workshops for adults, children, organisations and lectured in Story and Drama in Education at the University of Western Sydney. She provides individual coaching and mentoring for people keen to expand their storytelling skills. At conferences and in workshops, Christine offers opportunities for adults and children to tap into their creativity to give voice to their stories, whether they be true, tall, or traditional tales.

Susan Ida Boucaud is a Toronto-based storyteller who performs traditional stories, personal narratives and adaptations of literary works both online and in person. Her work as a teller, volunteer in the storytelling community and co-producer of storytelling events reflects a commitment to nurturing the spaces where stories can thrive.
