Brain-computer interface (BCI), a neural device that translates a person’s brain activity into external responses or directives, might sound like science fiction. Yet we are getting closer to the day where we can directly interact with and control machines with our minds. What does this mean for those with a disability?

Joining us for this panel discussion is a patented inventor of a brain control assistive tech, a neuroengineer who enabled the first demonstration of brain-controlled robotic limbs by people with paralysis, and a founder leading a world-class research & development team that has delivered a human-grade implant. Together let’s explore the possibilities and applications of BCI.

Zuby Onwuta is a neuroscience researcher, patented inventor, tech startup founder, Disability Advocate and mentor. From losing his medical studies, US Army and engineering careers to visual impairment, it inspired him to invent Think and Zoom, a solution that reads and responds to human brain waves to provide vision augmentation and reading assistance. His accomplishments include 2 USPTO patents and global speaking engagements in 6 countries which includes SXSW and 4 times at TEDx. As a Disability Advocate he has appeared at the US Congress and the United Nations. For his work as a global mentor he was awarded the Presidential Service Award by US President Barack Obama. Zuby has a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. @ZubyOnwuta @thinkandzoom

Beata Jarosiewicz joined the brain-machine interface team at Neuralink in November 2020, where she is helping to develop software and decoding algorithms for a fully-implanted, wireless, high-channel count brain-machine interface. Beata received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh and as a postdoc she introduced brain-computer interface decoder perturbation as a way to study the brain’s solution to the credit assignment problem. During her time at BrainGate at Brown University and then at Stanford, she developed brain-computer interface self-calibration algorithms that improved the quality and robustness of neural control of computer cursors and robotic arms by people with paralysis. Back in 2018, she was at NeuroPace, the maker of the RNS System, the first FDA-approved fully implanted brain stimulation device for treating epilepsy. @neuralink

Nicholas Opie After co-founding Synchron, Nick began crafting the Stentrode, a minimally-invasive brain-computer interface, entirely by hand. He now leads a world-class R&D team that has delivered a human-grade implant, manufactured with cutting-edge global partners. Nick completed his PhD with Bionic Vision Australia and has 15 years of experience in building neural interfaces. He has published more than 50 top-tier peer-review scientific papers, including in Nature journals, and has over 60 filed patents. Nick earned his undergraduate degrees in Electrical Engineering and Science, and his masters degree in Business Administration. He spends his free time mentoring young researchers and entrepreneurs and teaching his daughters how to build robots.
