Branching Out: Black Mountain Orchid Walk

Black Mountain is home to more than 60 native orchid species. Orchids come in some fascinating shapes, like this Daddy Long-legs Orchid. And this Copper Beard Orchid looks like a little Dwarf from Middle Earth.

Join Derek and Lisa, orchid experts from the Canberra Orchid Society, on Black Mountain to learn about our local orchids, many of which are threatened including the Canberra Spider Orchid.

WALK DETAILS

• Date: Tuesday 29 September 2026

• Time: 9:30am to 12:00pm (approx. depends on walk speed & questions)

• Walk terrain: Bush tracks and fire trails, not flat, some hills and steep sections
  (we will be walking slowly, talking and looking at flowers etc - don't let the steep sections put you off)

MEETING LOCATION

• Frith Road - Parking area behind the CSIRO building and next to the Actew electrical sub-station

People coming up Barry Drive from the city can exit left onto Frith Road and on returning go under Barry Drive and turn right towards the city.

Those coming from Belconnen or the GDE will need to first go down Fairfax Street/ (MacArthur Avenue) to the first roundabout and turn up Dryandra Street and under the subway at Firth Road.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR

• Long pants

• Enclosed, sturdy, shoes

• A hat, sunscreen

• Drinking water and snacks

RESCHEDULING

If the forecast for the day is unsafe, or unpleasant enough that the walk won't be enjoyable, the walk will be rescheduled. If it's getting reschedule registered people will be notified as soon as possible, and at least two hours before the meeting time.
