Bridging The Gap: An Evening of Indian Music
with Nazan Aktas (Cello) & William Rossel (Tabla)
Nazan Aktas (cello) & William Rossel (tabla) will present a performance of afternoon and evening ragas in the styles of the North Indian, Maihar and Lucknow gharanas. This performance will highlight the versatility of the cello and tabla as both solo and accompanying instruments, as each player will take turns accompanying the other. The cello (being a relatively new instrument to Indian music) and tabla together will bridge the gap between old & new in the hopes of sharing the beautiful music of the North Indian Classical tradition.

About the Artists
Nazan Aktas
Nazan Aktas is a cellist based in Northern California who has performed with many artists, ensembles and orchestras throughout the Bay Area and beyond. She has been studying at the Ali Akbar College of Music since 2015, under the tutelage of Alam Khan, son of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan. She has also studied vocal music with Ranjana Ghatak, disciple of Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty and received further instruction from cellist Saskia Rao-de Haas, who studied with Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. She is a graduate of Sonoma State University, with a Bachelor of Music Degree with a double concentration in Performance and Jazz Studies and has a Master's Degree from Berklee College of Music in Contemporary Performance.
William Rossel
William Rossel is an internationally recognized Tabla player, educator, and archivist. A senior disciple of legendary Tabla Maestro, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, William was initiated into Hindustani classical music over 25 years ago. He has trained continuously under his Guru at the Ali Akbar College of Music since 2006, and at the California Institute of the Arts where he earned a Masters degree in North Indian Classical Music Performance (2010) under the mentorship of his Guru. William has toured extensively and performed in India, Canada, Colombia and the United States with artists such Swapan Chaudhuri, Saswati Sen, Alam Khan, Jayanta Banerjee, and Arjun Verma at prestigious venues such as the War Memorial Opera House, Harbourfront Centre, Luis Ángel Arango Concert Hall, the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, and the Aashish Khan School of World Music. William is a longtime faculty member of the Ali Akbar College of Music and Professor of Music at Yuba College, where he founded and directs the YC Indian Music Ensemble.
