FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

We want everyone to be able enjoy the benefits of self expression, regardless of financial standing. If you would like to take a class but need financial assistance, please fill out our scholarship request form here.

About the Class:

Create a landscape painting with soft pastels! We’ll start with a simple pencil drawing followed by a watercolor underpainting to set-up shapes and dimensions. From there we will begin using soft pastels working from a focal point out, dark to light to create the mood and capture the colors of the landscape. Students will learn techniques for blending pastels, layering pastels, and how to apply charcoal to soften edges and push areas into the background. For beginner to intermediate pastel painters.

Recommended Supplies:

  • Soft pastels - any brand; (instructor uses Unison and NuPastel)
  • UArt Paper Board - 9'x12" and / or 12" x 16": (instructor uses 500 grit)
  • Vine charcoal sticks
  • Watercolor (for underpainting) - Payne's Grey, Van Dyck Brown, & Burnt Sienna (purple is optional but fun)
  • Watercolor brush and jar / container to hold water
  • Pencil (use for a quick drawing of shapes)

About the Artist: Jim Hallenbeck

Growing up in Catskill, NY, Jim was constantly drawing. This led to being the art editor of his high school yearbook, majoring in Fine Arts at SUNY Plattsburgh, and obtaining a BS in Art Education from Florida International University of Miami in December 1979. Through the years during his IBM career, Jim continued to paint as time allowed. Now retired, he pursuing his life long dream of being an artist. His oil paintings include primarily landscapes, city scenes, and local Raleigh landmarks. He is a studio artist of Artspace in Raleigh, NC, and a contributing artist of the Mattie King Davis Gallery in Beaufort, N.C.
