Broken Compass Bluegrass
Description
We never pick up with Broken Compass Bluegrass where we left off. Our hometown heroes continue to take quantum leaps as they traverse the country, leaving legions of new fans in their wake. BCB’s meteoric rise leaves a trail of stardust spiraling as far as the eye can see. Every performance here at the Crazy Horse signifies a milestone for the band as they ascend into the great beyond.
When they play festivals like Winter WonderGrass (which included a collaboration with Billy Failing of Billy Strings’ band), Merlefest, Father’s Day Bluegrass Festival, Cannifest and Camp Deep End, as they have this year, they don’t merely “make fans.” They stir people to their core, establishing diehard loyalty which speaks volumes to the overall impact of their music and how easy they are to root for.
Fresh off supporting both The Infamous Stringdusters and Brothers Comatose on the east coast, it’s clear to see how BCB is leading the way in the contemporary bluegrass revival. The elders of the scene are exponentially recognizing their role as torch-bearers. The quartet combine tradition with innovation in a way that pushes boundaries while maintaining a comforting sense of familiarity. Their live performances are characterized by glorious harmonies, ferocious solos, and an undeniable joy that permeates through every note. Yes, they are very young, which is part of the novelty factor. Yet it’s apparent these are old souls who are already esteemed ambassadors for the bluegrass artform.
The band's repertoire includes an ever-growing bank of dazzling original compositions as well as fresh takes on timeless classics, all delivered with their own distinctive style. They also offer unconventional deviations with versions of Phish’s “Sand,” Grateful Dead’s “Let it Grow,” REM’s “Losing My Religion” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” all serving as show-stoppers. However, their original songwriting is the clearest indication of how extraordinarily talented these artists are. The lyrical depth they have been able to mine at a young age exceeds what many artists achieve over the course of a lifetime. This is definitely not “Fool’s Gold.”
From the moment they take the stage, it's clear that Broken Compass Bluegrass is a unicorn of a unit. They weave intricate melodies and harmonize with ease, creating a tantalizing spectrum of sound. Whether you're a bluegrass aficionado or just looking for some foot-stomping fun, Broken Compass Bluegrass is sure to leave you spellbound.
The Crazy Horse has been a home away from home for them since the beginning and always brings out their best. This is their second two-night stand in the intimate room and you can be sure the band will forge even further into New Horizons.
