To make this a true community dance, we've invited the local sound system Celtic Roots Hi-Fi to join us in session. Get ready for a proper day of crucial reggae and dub music, heavyweight basslines, and positive energy as we plant the seeds of a new sound system family right here in the Northern Beaches. WHAT IS A REGGAE SOUND SYSTEM?

Sound system culture celebrates music that originated from the small island of Jamaica. This vibrant scene made its way to the UK through the Windrush generation's wave of migration, growing into an underground phenomenon that eventually spread across Europe, South America, Asia, and the rest of the world.

A sound system isn't just speakers; it's a dedicated crew of music fanatics who transport a hi-fidelity sound system to venues. They play vinyl records using custom-built equipment. The crew typically includes a selector (who picks the tunes), an operator (who controls the sound), a 'box' crew (who set up the massive speakers), and MCs (who hype the crowd and chant over the music). Together, they present music in a unique way that is both heard AND felt, creating an immersive experience for the audience.
