Event description

You're invited to join us for a unique birdwatching experience on South Bruny Island!

Due to the success of this event over the last two years, we are once again partnering with Inala Nature Tours to offer our supporters the opportunity to participate in a discounted birdwatching and property tour of the 607-hectare Inala Conservation Reserve.

Walk with one of Inala’s specialist nature and conservation guides around the reserve, which is home to all 12 Tasmanian endemic birds and one of the first properties to join the Land for Wildlife Program in Tasmania. Hone your Tasmanian bird identification skills and learn about their ecological needs as you observe the endangered Tasmanian forty-spotted pardalote from the purpose-built canopy platform within one of its largest known colonies. You can also see the habitat and nest boxes of the swift parrots and, if we are lucky, the fabulous bird itself.

You'll be guided through the rich diversity of flora, fauna, fungi, geology and landscapes and learn more about the conservation issues that face both the birds and the wider ecology of Bruny and Tasmania.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

To enable as many people to enjoy this amazing opportunity as possible, we ask that you only book in for one tour per person over the whole weekend. Tours are limited to 15 people.

Choose whether you explore the 'lowland' areas of the Inala conservation property (which is all flatter ground and moderate forest trails suitable for all levels of fitness and mobility) or enjoy the more rapid and strenuous 'hill' tour to the very top of the property with gorgeous views over Cloudy Bay (suited to those with good mobility and fitness).

The tours are being offered on both Saturday 30th November (afternoon only) and Sunday 1st December (subject to availability):

  • Saturday Afternoon Lowland tour 14:30 - 17:30
  • Saturday Afternoon Hill tour 14:30 - 17:30
  • Sunday Morning Lowland tour 09:00 - 12:00
  • Sunday Morning Hill tour 09:00 - 12:00
  • Sunday Afternoon Lowland tour 13:30 -16:30
  • Sunday Afternoon Hill tour 13:30 - 16:30

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Spaces for this event are strictly limited and each participant is required to purchase a ticket.

Tours will be departing on time so you must arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time. Allow enough time for the ferry trip and drive to Inala as required.

The Bruny Island Ultra is on Saturday Nov 30th. Please plan your ferry times well and anticipate potential delays to ensure you make it to your allocated tour. The afternoon tour on Saturday will finish in time to return to the ferry landing to depart the island but please anticipate potential delays.

What's included: coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided at the end of each tour. You're required to bring all food and snacks needed for the duration of your tour as no additional food or drink will be supplied on the day.

Directions:  Directions here

What to bring:

  • rain jacket, ideally with a hood, and warm/waterproof clothes
  • enclosed, sturdy walking shoes (the terrain is steep and uneven in parts)
  • sunscreen and sun hat
  • day pack
  • all food and snacks required for the day
  • water bottle, with enough water for the day
  • binoculars and a camera (optional); there are plenty of great things to see!
  • thermos, mug and tea to enjoy while out on the walk (optional)

The weather, as we know, is unpredictable, so please come prepared.

Registration:
As always, places for the trip will be limited, so please register online as soon as you can.

Revenue from ticket sales goes towards covering the cost of hosting TLC events. There is no need to bring your tickets on the day - we will have an attendee list.

In the event of inclement weather, or a regional total fire ban, the event will be postponed/cancelled and you will be notified via email on the evening of Friday 27th October. The TLC will refund tickets in full if the event is cancelled. Please note that the TLC can take no financial responsibility for attendees' pre-booked accommodation, in the event of a cancellation.

We often take photographs at events and we use these in TLC publications. If you do not want your photo taken, please let us know; otherwise, we will assume we may use photographs that include you.

To help avoid the spread of root rot (Phytophthora cinnamomi) and environmental weeds, please make sure your footwear and vehicles are free from soil and debris where possible. We will have spray for your shoes available on the day.

The TLC acknowledges the original owners of the land, the palawa/pakana people, and we pay our respects to elders past and present.
