As part of Edinburgh Deaf Festival, BSL Film Club will be hosting a special screening of Ted Evans’ Deaf-led thriller, Retreat.

The event will be introduced by BSL Film Club co-programmers, Tomas Gerrard and Charlie Little. There will also be a Q&A after the screening, with guests to be confirmed.

In search of belonging and connection, a young woman arrives at a remote wellness retreat for Deaf people, but nothing is what it seems. A gripping debut thriller from filmmaker Ted Evans that will unsettle audiences and leave them guessing until the final frame.

Billed as the world’s first Deaf thriller and made in British Sign Language with an all-Deaf principal cast and a Deaf director, Retreat stars Anne Zander, Sophie Stone, and James Boyle, 

Following the screening will be an accessible Q&A with local filmmaker and Solar Bear's Film & Screen Lead Officer, Klarissa Webster. 

Accessibility

BSL Film Club is an inclusive and accessible film club offering films with descriptive subtitles and open discussions in BSL after each screening. 

All audiences with varying sign language fluency, both deaf and hearing, are welcome.

This film will be shown with descriptive subtitles (also known as captions). 

• This event will have BSL/English interpretation during the introduction and Q&A. 

• There will be English-language live captioning during the introduction and Q&A.

• There is an external access lift for step-free access to the building. Once inside the building, there is a lift from the ground floor to the Blackwood Bar area, accessible on the left upon entry to the venue. Accessible toilets can also be found on the first floor. There is also lift access to the basement level. This screening will take place in the Blackwood Bar area.
