Understand the effects of physical and biological processes on watersheds, from the uplandscape to the riverscape, and the role humans and beavers can play in accelerating those processes.
Describe the design criteria for process-based restoration of fluvial systems.
Identify system constraints, and discuss form-based construction practices and their associated long-term impacts.
Recognize the variety of structure styles, material options, and tools available — and where each is appropriate.
Know which tools are helpful during the design and planning stage of a project.
Know what to look for when deciding where to place a structure, and why.
Understand what wildlife could be affected by the work, and how to minimize impact.
Understand the carbon cycle, and how to maximize restoration gains while reducing the risk of flooding, erosion, and wildfire.
Build beaver dam analogs and other wood structures from locally sourced materials using a variety of techniques.
Understand the full workflow, from materials gathering through an installed structure.
Understand the larger ecosystem of how this work comes into being through planning and partnership.
Understand the metrics by which a project can be shown to be driving process, and how to turn that into data and tell the story.
Develop the critical thinking skills needed to evaluate the success of process-based restoration projects, and how they work with nature.
