Background

One in five learners are neurodivergent. They learn, see the world, process information and interact in a way that’s fundamentally different from their peers.

With the right support, neurodivergent learners thrive and bring new dimensions and perspectives to your classroom and school. Without it, they are likely to underachieve, disengage, act out and drop out - something no one wants for their students.

Most teachers and school leaders however have had little or no opportunity to learn about neurodiversity and what it takes to build a neuroinclusive school and classroom where all students can thrive.

And when you do try and find out, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by a mountain of information which is often complex, contradictory, inaccurate and requires even more work to process and turn into action.

At the Neurodiversity in Education Project, we use our deep experience with neurodivergent students and their teachers, schools and families to bring you resources and programmes you can use right away to make a big difference. They are simple, fun and practical, with the back-up peer and expert support you need.

Neurodiversity in Education Project

The Neurodiversity in Education Project supports young people, teachers, schools and the education sector to build a neuroinclusive education system. We want every child and young person to thrive and achieve their full potential in education, no matter how their brain is wired.

Formerly the NZ Centre for Gifted Education, we have over 25 years experience working with neurodivergent children and young people, their teachers and schools, and their whānau. Together with these groups, we design and deliver a growing range of proven programmes that support neurodivergent students and empower educators, as well as advocating and partnering for system change.

Young Neurodiversity Champions

The Young Neurodiversity Champions are a group of rangatahi aged 15-25 standing up to change the way we think about neurodiversity and support young people in our education system. They deliver workshops, speak and run sensory rooms with groups all over NZ. (You can book them here!)
