Event description

A great opportunity to learn more from and with Indigenous people. The Building Bridges series on four Wednesday evenings in October.

Whatever your background, if you are interested in Indigenous insights and perspectives for our time this course is for you. As well, moving ahead with the Uluru Statement and the significant knowledge of First Nations people is indeed in the interest of all Australians and our common future.

Indigenous presenters or people who worked closely with them for many years will guide all sessions. All are experts in their field and eager to share their wisdom and experience with the community at large and be in dialogue with the participants. Several sessions will have a Western Sydney focus.

The evenings include the following topics and aim to meet your interests and questions:

Oct 5: The Uluru Statement from the Heart and Education for All

  • Giving Youth a Voice, Nicole Laupepa
  • Teaching School Children Aboriginal Language

Oct 12: Truth Telling Then and Now I

  • ABLAZE–The Story of the First Aboriginal Film Maker, Alec Morgan
  • Reconciliation Journey – One Western Sydney School’s Perspective, Chris Haberecht

Oct 19: Truth Telling Then and Now II

  • Myall Creek and Beyond, Graeme Cordiner
  • Healing the Wounds of the Stolen Generation, Aunty Rita Wright and Jan Wright

Oct 26: Growing Aboriginal Voices in our Democracy

  • What Happened to the Intervention, Paddy Gibson
  • A First Nations Grassroots Viewpoint on Current Topics, Lynda-June Coe

The sessions are designed to belong together and will be valuable to people new to these issues or engaged for many years. We recommend that participants attend all four of them. If you are unable to, you are welcome anyway.

It’s free, including supper, and a chance to meet directly with the presenters and others interested in these matters. Please plan to wear a mask. It is supported by the City of Parramatta, donations welcome.
