Building Educator Capacity Series: Session 2: Ways to support and encourage active participation in learning
Event description
PLEASE NOTE THIS MEETING IS A CEA MEMBER ONLY EVENT.
Build and transform the capacity of your learners - A four session series for educators.
Session 2: Ways to support and encourage active participation in learning
For any educator in the VET sector, ensuring students are engaged with the content and progressing through toward completion is one of the main drivers.
But what happens when it’s not solely a matter of engagement? When other, necessary precursors are missing?
In this session the hidden curriculum and the implicit expectations it brings by adulthood, potentially impacting those in a formal adult learning environment are unpacked. The session will explore how, despite best intentions, the effects of the hidden curriculum may be impacting learners’ willingness to participate, and their feelings of safety to do so. Strategies to mitigate this type of situation will also be explored.
The session will also focus on the necessary ingredients for learner engagement, and how educators may support and encourage that in their training environments.
Join this session to:
· Unpack what the hidden curriculum is in the context of adult learning and why it may be hindering learner progression
· Reflect on the principles of psychological safety and learn a simple, yet effective way to embed this within our teaching practice
· Get strategies to cultivate learner agency and ownership of their own learning journey
Participants in this session will work to collaboratively create a “Study Skill Survival Toolkit” that will provide relevant strategies for learners, supporting them to develop skills for self-directed learning.
Build and transform the capacity of your learners -Educator series context
Sustainable education goals are to develop the knowledge, skills and values in learners that are necessary for them to contribute to a more sustainable future.
For educators, it’s about equipping students to:
· Think critically
· Solve problems creatively
· Make informed decisions that consider social, environmental and economic impacts of their actions
· Know how to be active, resilient lifelong learners
This series delves into:
Holistic learning – emotional, social, cognitive, and practical dimensions
Critical thinking and problem-solving – developing judgment and reasoning
Collaborative learning – fostering participation and peer-based meaning-making
Authentic learning – connecting tasks to learners’ lives and futures
Future-focused skills – adaptability, resilience, and lifelong learning
The aim of adult educators is to make our lessons robust so we can build capacity in our students for them to become more effective participants within their own learning journeys.
There are four sessions in the series: Taking place on 24 July, 28 August, 11 September and 9 October. All are set for Thursdays at 11am. There will be opportunities for you to catch up or refresh your learning if you miss a session.
