Long-term engagement in meaningful work without burnout requires realistic strategies for sustaining ourselves and one other. This session explores trauma-informed principles of care as both personal and collective practices. Going beyond the individually-oriented "tea and bubblebaths" approach to self-care, we explore how to mitigate the impact of vicarious stress, periods of internal turmoil, or simply ongoing stress and uncertainty, emphasizing the role of connection and community and exploring institutional-level strategies for creating sustainable environments.

You'll leave with working knowledge of frameworks for trauma-informed self and community care, including:

The basics of trauma, "secondary stress," and burnout as it applies at individual and group levels
Strategies for self-care that take into account the nature and impact of difficult or vicariously traumatizing work
Why cultivating community is vital to creating supportive, sustainable organizational environments
Practices that organizations can implement that will support people in them as they engage in meaningful work
