Building stronger analysis in science

This 3 hour face-to-face workshop for science teachers will demonstrate how scaffolding, through the use of a matrix, leads to stronger evidence of original thought and more effective analysis and discussion when students produce scientific investigations.

More effective analysis and discussion

Are your students producing limited evidence of analysis and originality in practical investigations? Do your students default to the same generic errors when writing reports? 

This 3 hour face-to-face workshop for science teachers will demonstrate how scaffolding, through the use of a matrix, leads to stronger evidence of original thought by students and more effective analysis and discussion. 

Qualitative and quantitative data from the science classrooms of lead practitioners and education research will be shared to support you in the construction and application of your own analysis matrix for a chosen investigation.

ENHANCE the variety and depth of student evidence generated during the analysis of practical investigations.

This workshop is designed for senior secondary science teachers, but teachers of all the sciences are welcome.

Our presenters

Glen Arthur

Glen Arthur, Education Innovation Project Officer, has joined SACE with over two decades of experience in secondary science education and recent leadership roles in innovation. Glen was the state and national recipient of the 2018/19 NEiTA awards for excellence in teaching, innovation, and leadership.

Dr Hilary Coleman

Hilary is a lecturer at the University of Canberra and has a decade of teaching experience at school and university. She likes translating education research into practical strategies that work at the very complex and hectic “coal face”.

Covid-19 safety measures

In line with the SA Government’s Covid-Safe guidelines, Prescient will be following a Covid-Safe plan for all of it’s events. This workshop is only open to those residing in South Australia at the time of the event and numbers will not exceed state government guidelines. By attending you agree to follow State Government Covid-Safe event protocols and adhere to Prescient and venue staff instructions on the day of the event. This includes adhering to 1.5 metre physical distancing, ensuring diligence to hygiene measures and being prepared to cancel your attendance if you develop flu-like symptoms leading up to or on the day of the event.

Individually packaged morning tea will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch or enjoy lunch at one of many local cafes and restaurants nearby.
