ABOUT BUNGARRIBEE

Bungarribee is led by highly respected pianist, accordionist and composer, Gary Daley and features several of Australia’s pre‑eminent contemporary musicians. Each having made significant contributions in jazz, classical and world music.

As a child, Daley travelled down Bungarribee road in Sydney’s outer western suburbs to his earliest music lessons. Bungarribee, an indigenous word, translates to an idyllic meeting place. In this case one of like musical minds in which a creative journey unfolds via deep communication and improvisation. Bungarribee performs original compositions along with fresh improvisations on music by iconic composers such as Bartok, Ligeti, Bach and Debussy filtered through diverse styles such as jazz, folk and karnatic rhythms. For this musical adventure, Gary Daley will be joined by Paul Cutlan, Ollie Miller and Tunji Beier.

Gary Daley (Piano, Accordion & Electronics): Gary Daley is best known as a musician playing in some of the elite bands of Australian jazz; currently James Greening’s band 'Greening from Ear to Ear' and the jazz-world music band 'The Catholics'. He leads the quartet Bungarribee which features his own compositions and interpretations from the classical repertoire. Gary plays acoustic and electric piano, organ and also the piano accordion. Another side to Gary is his appearances weekdays on the ABC TV children’s channel in the pre-school show 'Lah Lah’s Adventures'.

Paul Cutlan (Reeds): Paul’s uniquely expressive voice as a multi-instrumentalist and composer is informed by many styles, including contemporary classical music, world music and jazz. Paul is a long-standing member of the Australian Art Orchestra and ARIA-winning world-music group MARA!

Ollie Miller (Cello & Electronics): Oliver is a cellist, composer, and arranger. He is a founding and current member of The Noise, Bungarribee, and the chamber jazz group Amphibious. Ollie has performed and collaborated with Shaun Parker, Judy Bailey Trio, Amanda Palmer (on Good News Week), Georges Lentz, Delta Goodrem, Anthony & The Johnsons, Sydney Philharmonia, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Ensemble Offspring, Australian Idol, Florence and The Machine, Orchestra of the Antipodes, Kammer Ensemble, The Sydney Theatre Company & The ABC Sideshow.

Tunji Beier (Indian & African Percussion): Tunji has adopted the teaching he has received from various teachers from Classical Western, Jazz, South Indian Classical, West African – Yoruba & Persian masters, into a unique style of his own incorporating electronics and looping. Tunji is currently working in Gary Daley’s projects Sanctuary & Bungarribee, Shaun Parker’s dance Piece “AM I” with Nick Wales as Musical Director which premiered at the Sydney Opera House for the Sydney Festival 2014 & Linsey Pollak’s new project “Mrs.Curly & The Norwegian Smoking Pipe”.

"The compositions came from such adventurers in the classical tradition as Sculthorpe, Bartok and Ligeti, French jazz composer Louis Sclavis and from Daley and Miller. The players could improvise freely on any of the above, and mix in Carnatic rhythmic flavours."

Excerpt from John Shand review

“The music, equally, is located somewhere to the north-east of jazz but definitely south-south-west of European art music. The quartet grew out of Daley’s larger ‘Sanctuary’ project, yet retains that ensemble’s unique breadth of vision, and intricate interweaving of composed and improv elements.”

Excerpt from Johnhardaker review

“The commonality, of course, is improvisation, and Daley has certainly provided Bungarribee with not just diverse contexts, but with entirely different sound worlds in which to bring those skills to bear.”

Excerpt from John Shand review

“Each member of the band oozes experience, which triggers confidence in the listener to something new and unforgettable... some magic happens on the stage and it’s hard to put a finger on it. What an intelligent approach to music! ”
