Risky Conversations: How healthcare professionals can speak up to support patient choices in clinical settings

‘I know what I want to say but I don’t know if I’m allowed to say it’ – an exploration of speaking up in allied health new graduates.

Philippa Friary will provide an overview of her PhD to date, which is looking at speaking up behaviours in the allied health new graduate workforce. This is a two-phase realist-informed study. This presentation will set the scene with a scoping review and the discoveries from a series of focus groups involving new graduates in allied health and supervisors of new graduates. While phase two of the study is yet to be completed, Philippa will provide a flavour of what is coming out of the 1year longitudinal cohort study.

Philippa is the Director of Clinical Education in Speech Science in the School of Psychology at The University of Auckland and is a speech-language therapist. She is also a part-time PhD student, a full-time dog mum and a lover of 90’s hip hop. She has a passion for clinical education and, in particular, interprofessional education and professional supervision and completes research in these spaces in addition to the role of clients in the curriculum.

‘Who decides?’ Balancing rights and risk in rehabilitation services.

Dr Rachelle Martin will talk about a study that she is involved with, led by Dr Paul Skirrow, alongside Prof Jean Hay-Smith and Anna Hobman.

The purpose of this study is to look at how clinicians balance their concerns about safety, risk and client growth when providing rehabilitation services. We have used qualitative interviews to understand how rehabilitation clinicians make decisions, to identify factors supporting or inhibiting clinicians’ abilities to promote independence and choice in people experiencing disability. We are at the stage of data analysis, and Rachelle will share some initial thoughts to whet your appetite for the final findings!
