Effective Cyber Incident Response frameworks – why the first 24 – 48 hours are critical

Cyber vulnerability for businesses has evolved over the past decade and it has never been more important to maintain a cyber resilient mindset and to actively focus our efforts towards prevention and preparedness. We have seen the landscape shift and the question ‘what if our business suffers an incident’ to ‘when our business suffers an incident’ has shifted our focus.

Join us to hear from two experienced Cyber Breach Coaches, Emily Wood and James Blakely of Clyde & Co. Emily and James have a long history of responding to and managing cyber breaches, having worked on some of Australia’s well-known high-profile incidents. Emily and James will walk us through the lifecycle of a cyber incident and why the first 24-48 hours are critical to getting a business back on track. We will hear how effective incident response frameworks can impact the severity of an incident and the importance of integrating cyber insurance into your incident response plan.

Emily Wood, Senior Associate, Clyde & Co

Emily is a Senior Associate who specialises in cyber incident response and privacy law. Emily is dedicated to supporting clients throughout the incident life cycle: from first discovery, to working alongside IT and cybersecurity experts and assessing forensic evidence, to advising on legal and regulatory obligations and notifying relevant government bodies and individuals. Emily is also passionate about educating clients on cyber risk scenarios, including incident response process, potential legal and regulatory implications, commercial considerations and the role of cyber insurance.

Emily has developed a portfolio of clients across a range of industries and levels of cyber readiness, including SMEs, government bodies, ASX listed companies and global organisations. Emily has also recently received the Lawyers Weekly 30 under 30 Award, and is currently studying a Masters of Cybersecurity at UNSW to supplement her technical knowledge and further assist her clients and team.

James Blakely, Communications Manager, Clyde & Co

James is a Communications Manager specialising in cyber incident response, crisis management communications, data enrichment and validation methodologies, and establishing ‘single view of customer’ response models.

Prior to joining Clyde & Co, James established and lead ID Support NSW - Australia’s first dedicated government agency responsible for supporting citizens, businesses and other government entities respond to data breaches and identity compromise events. Whilst leading ID Support NSW, James managed the response to more than 150 large scale data breaches impacting NSW Government and its citizens.

During his time at ID Support NSW, James was also responsible for improving NSW Government’s identity proofing processes and practices, as well as uplifting general privacy and cyber security awareness for citizens and businesses operating in NSW.
