Business Succession Planning Forum – Event 3: Business Sale & Restructuring

Many HunterNet members fall into the category of small to medium businesses (less than 200 employees), which in Australia represent 99% of all Australian businesses and employ 66% of the Australian workforce.  They are often the result of the blood, sweat, and tears of a single owner or small group of owners.  Ensuring that plans are made for a successful transition of leadership and/or ownership of small to medium businesses benefits the business, its employees, and the peace of mind of the owner.  A key component to successful transitions is carefully managing both business and personal relationships throughout the transition.

HunterNet has facilitated a collaboration between SWS Lawyers and KPMG to host a series of presentations and panel discussion events designed to inform members so that they can more capably plan for business succession.  The first event in the HunterNet’s Business Succession Planning Forum was presented on the 4th of May and focused on “partnering” – the process by which a business partners with another business, as a pathway to an owner exit.  The second event in the Forum was presented on the 30th of November and focused on family business transitions from one generation to the next, and briefly touched on alternative options for business ownership transitions such as management buy-outs and management buy-ins.

In the upcoming third and final event in the Forum, the topic of business owner exit via a business sale and restructuring will be analysed within an informal panel discussion.  Business owners who have successfully completed a business sale will share their experiences alongside seasoned legal and tax advisors to provide supporting structural input and guidance.  The panel discussion will wrap up with a valuable question-and-answer opportunity for HunterNet members.  The Forum event is aimed to assist HunterNet members consider their options, avoid potential pitfalls, and successfully navigate a business sale process.
